Keeping things fresh
Watch the customers who come to your store. Do they walk through your shop quickly and walk out the door? Or, do they stop to browse, pick up a bowl or coffee mug and handle it? If your customers aren't spending time in the store, you're losing sales. Customers who stop, look and feel are customers who buy. Your challenge as a craft retailer is creating displays that give them a reason to spend money.
How you show off all the great stuff you bought at the ACC wholesale show can make the difference between a profitable season and looking for a job. Take a step back, look at your store, is the carpet under the display rack three shades lighter? What's the first thing you see when you walk in, dust or dazzle? The first few feet inside the door is where the customer gets his first impression of your store. While its true that many of our customers are vacationers, many will return year after year to see whats new. Give those returning customers a good impression with a front and center, "New Products" area. Another idea for helping customers find new items in your store is a stack of brightly colored new product sheets just inside the door. Make it specific and keep it up to date. It should say things like "New work by Stephani the lithographer right hand corner of the shop". Or, "See our new line of boiling mud pottery north wall center". Make sure the sheet title is easy to read and tells people what it is so they will utilize it. Tittles like "New Artists at Funky Street Gallery" in big bold print are whats needed. In most handcrafted gallerys, keeping inventory fresh isn't a problem but with a limited staff updating the display from time to time is not a high priority. Keeping some displays that are easily updated in high visibility areas of the store, and pointing potential buyers to them, can give you that fresh look you need to keep sales consistent.
